Backstory of Neraxis the Veilkeeper
Neraxis the Veilkeeper was once a prodigious seer in the ancient quarters of Fez, born with the gift of piercing visions and the ability to peer beyond the mortal veil. From a young age, he discovered that reflective surfaces—pools, polished obsidian, and sacred mirrors—allowed him to glimpse hidden truths, to see both the seen and the unseen. However, his early brilliance carried a dangerous flaw: he did not seek truth to enlighten others, but to control it. He began manipulating what people perceived, adjusting their visions to sow doubt and fear, enjoying the power of unseen influence.
As his mastery over reflection magic grew, Neraxis became increasingly isolated, slipping into obsession. He experimented on unwilling subjects, twisting their perceptions of reality, showing them possibilities that never existed and hiding truths that were vital. His once-noble visions became riddles and traps; he began to believe that reality itself was meaningless, and only perception mattered.
It was during this descent that the Shadowed Council discovered him. They saw in his talent a perfect instrument for their clandestine operations. They offered him a place among them, granting him immortality and authority as the Veilkeeper in exchange for his loyalty. Neraxis accepted, finding purpose among those who revered ambiguity and deception. In their ranks, he perfected his art of illusions, weaving half-truths and reflective distortions into a web that no seeker could fully navigate.
Neraxis now operates in shadowed halls and mirrored chambers, manipulating the senses of all who seek knowledge. For Euryeth and his companions, Neraxis is not a mere obstacle but a philosophical trial: to discern truth from illusion requires inner clarity, patience, and unyielding perception.
Symbolism & Echo
* Fractured mirrors reflect possible fates, not reality.
* Mist and shadow precede his arrival, distorting sight.
* Candles and light sources dim as if veiled by unseen curtains.
* His mask alternates between obsidian and cracked mirror, symbolizing the duality of truth and deception.
Role in Narrative Neraxis serves as the Shadowed Council’s master manipulator, ensuring that even the wisest are uncertain. He challenges protagonists to trust their senses and question their judgments. Unlike other adversaries who confront physically, Neraxis attacks perception, making allies doubt one another and sowing hesitation before any battle is fought.
Greeting (in his voice) “Look closely, wanderer. Do you see me—or do you see what I allow?”
